เมื่อพูดถึงนิสิต นักศึกษาแลกเปลี่ยน เรามักจะนึกถึงเด็กไทยไปแลกเปลี่ยนที่ต่างประเทศ แต่จริงๆ แล้ว ประเทศไทยก็เป็นจุดหมายปลายทางหนึ่งที่เด็กในหลายๆ ประเทศสนใจอยากจะมาศึกษาและแลกเปลี่ยนวัฒนธรรมเช่นกัน ยิ่งทุกคนพูดเป็นเสียงเดียวกันว่า “ชอบเมืองไทย และรักทุกๆ อย่างในประเทศไทย” ฟังแล้วก็ชื่นใจ
ครั้งนี้ SWU ZEED ได้มีโอกาสสัมภาษณ์นิสิตแลกเปลี่ยนจากประเทศฝรั่งเศส เนเธอร์แลนด์ และเยอรมนี ที่มาเรียนคณะเศรษฐศาสตร์ และ วิทยาลัยนานาชาติเพื่อศึกษาความยั่งยืน ว่าพวกเค้ารู้สึกอยากไรบ้างที่ได้มาแลกเปลี่ยนที่ มศว ได้รับประสบการณ์แบบไหน และได้เรียนรู้อะไรจากการมาแลกเปลี่ยนที่ประเทศไทย ติดตามอ่านบทสัมภาษณ์นี้กันค่ะ

I’m Andi Ibrahimi, 22 years old, and I live in Germany. I study at the faculty of Economics at the SWU.

My name is Rob Waas, I am 23 years old and I come from The Netherlands/Holland. In Holland I am studying Tourism Management at Breda University of Applied Sciences and I am a senior student. Last year I have also studied at Srinakharinwirot University as an exchange student and this year I am studying at Srinakharinwirot University again for one semester. This year however I am studying at the Economics Faculty and the faculty of International College for Sustainabilities.

I’m Malo Hamel, I am 20, I come from La Rochelle in France. My school in France is Excelia-Group. I am studying at SWUIC for one semester.

I’m Teresa Raup, I am 23 years old, from Germany and study one semester at the Srinakharinwirot University at the Faculty of Economics. In Germany I study information management and corporate communication at the HNU (Hochschule Neu-Ulm).

– Have you ever known anything about Thailand before you visit here?

Andi : Yes, I heard a lot about the beautiful islands and beaches in Thailand, but also about the culture.
(ครับ ผมได้ยินมามากเกี่ยวกับความสวยงามของเกาะ ทะเล ในประเทศไทย และยังมีวัฒนธรรมอีกด้วย)
Rob : Since I have studied here before in Thailand and since I made lots of Thai friends last year I do know some things about the Thai lifestyle and Thai culture, but I definitely want to learn more about Thai culture and experience more Thai activities.

Malo : I have been to Thailand in 2012 for holidays and I really enjoyed it that is why I wanted to come back, to know more about Thai culture and travel in many places.

Teresa : My parents already made vacation in Thailand, my father also worked in Bangkok before. I knew that Thailand is one of the most visited countries, well-known for its beautiful nature, wonderful spiritual places and of course: good food! 😉

– The reaction of people around you when you told them that you will come to Thailand?

Andi : All the people were fascinated, and a lot of friends told me that they’re going to visit me.

Rob : The reaction of friends in my home country was that they were excited for me and jealous of me because I was allowed a second time of exchange to Thailand. Back in Thailand some of my Thai friends were also excited to see me again studying at Srinakharinwirot University, because some Thai friends also studied at my university in The Netherlands last semester and it was good to see them again.

Malo : People around me were very happy for me. Also, maybe a little impressed because it is very far away and very different than France. And the peoples around me that have been to Thailand before told me that I will enjoy for sure.

Teresa : A lot of people felt jealous and also wanted to join and come visit me.

– Have you ever been an exchange student at SWU?

Andi : No.

Rob : Like explained above, last year I have also studied at Srinakharinwirot University for one semester, then went back to The Netherlands to do my internship and now I am back again for one semester.

– Why did you decide to become an exchange student in Thailand? And why did you choose to attend SWU?
(ทำไมคุณถึงตัดสินใจมาแลกเปลี่ยนที่ไทย และ อะไรทำให้คุณเลือกที่จะมาแลกเปลี่ยนที่ มศว)
Andi : I heard so many good things about Thailand. Everyone who came back from a vacation in Thailand said that it was very beautiful. All these beautiful temples,
mountains, islands etc. amazed me. The SWU is a partner university so it was very easy for me to choose SWU. Furthermore, the Campus looked nice.
(ผมได้ยินเรื่องดีๆ เกี่ยวกับประเทศไทยมามากมายครับ ทุกคนที่กลับมาจากวันหยุดพักผ่อนในประเทศไทยบอกว่าประเทศไทยสวยมาก มีทั้งวัดสวย ภูเขา เกาะ ต่างๆ ทำให้ผมประหลาดใจ และ มศว เป็น partner กับ

Rob : Srinakharinwirot University was one of many choices for me to go to as an exchange student. Because I have been here before and because I liked Srinakharinwirot University and Thailand so much, I decided to once again go to Thailand for my second time of being an exchange student.

Malo : As I said, I already been in Thailand and I wanted to come back and become a student in Thailand was the best way for me to stay here for a long time to learn a lot about Thailand. SWU was the only choice in Thailand available.

Teresa : I love the Asian culture because it’s so different to ours in Europe. The spirit, the way of living and the food are very different. I just wanted to experience new things to expand my horizon and develop my personality by making this unique journey.

– What is your major (at SWU)? Why did you choose this major?

Andi : My major is economics. I was always interested in becoming a financial director of a big company e.g. Mercedes-Benz. Since my childhood I was always good in
mathematics and calculating.
(วิชาเอกของผมคือเศรษฐศาสตร์ครับ ผมสนใจที่จะเป็นผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายการเงินให้กับบริษัทใหญ่ๆ อย่าง Mercedes-Benz เสมอ ผมเก่งคณิตศาสตร์และเก่งคำนวณมาตลอดตั้งแต่เด็กๆ แล้ว)
Rob : My majors this year at SWU are Economics and HTM at SWUIC. Because Tourism Management is my major in Holland, HTM is fitting and is suitable for me to attend courses from, but because it is my second time studying here, I was not allowed to take the same courses from last year, and I was not allowed to choose courses from the third year or lower. So the only possible way for me to study at SWU again was to choose courses from another faculty. Therefor I am studying at the Economics faculty as well, because I had some Economic courses back at my home university as well.

Malo : I’m not sure but I think it is sustainable tourism. I choose this major because I’m studying tourism in France and the sustainable aspect is very interesting for me.

– What it’s like to live far away from your home country?

Andi : Sometimes I miss my home, but I am happy to be here in Thailand. It’s the first time that I’m living by myself and I’m really enjoying my freedom to be honest.
(บางครั้งผมก็คิดถึงบ้านครับ แต่ผมมีความสุขนะที่ได้มาอยู่ที่นี่ นี่คือครั้งแรกเลยที่ผมมาอาศัยอยู่ด้วยตัวคนเดียว พูดจริงๆ เลยว่า ผมรู้สึกมีความสุขและอิสระมากครับ)
Rob : I do not have any problems with living in Thailand/abroad for 5/6 months because I really enjoy life here and I have many Thai and exchange friends I can hang out with. Once in a while I facetime my family too, so I am not homesick at all.
(ผมไม่มีปัญหาในการมาอยู่ที่ประเทศไทยหรือต่างประเทศในระยะเวลา 5-6 เดือนเลย เพราะว่าอยู่ที่นี่ผมสนุกมาก ผมมีเพื่อนคนไทยและเพื่อนนิสิตแลกเปลี่ยนที่ผมสามารถออกไปเที่ยวด้วยได้ นานๆ ที ผมก็จะ facetime กับครอบครัว เพราะฉะนั้นผมเลยไม่รู้สึกคิดถึงบ้านเลย)
Malo : I had little fears about that before to come but I feel very good here. Thai people are very friendly, I feel welcome everywhere. I just sometimes miss French food but Thai food is so good that I don’t really care.
(ผมกลัวนิดหน่อยก่อนมาที่นี่ แต่ตอนนี้ผมรู้สึกดีมากที่ได้มาอยู่ที่นี่ คนไทยเป็นมิตรมาก ผมรู้สึกดีในทุกที่ บางครั้งผมก็คิดถึงอาหารฝรั่งเศสนะ แต่อาหารไทยคือดีมากจนทำให้ผมลืมไปเลยครับ)
Teresa : On the one hand, I miss my home, my family and my friends. But on the other hand, I see and learn new things everyday which I would not in my natural habitat. It helps me to become more open-minded and develop my personality.

– What is the difficult situation you’ve faced at SWU?
(สถานการณ์ยาก ๆ ที่คุณเจอที่ มศว)
Rob : Because it is my second time studying at SWU, it took a long time before all my courses got approved and it took a long time before I got permission to study at SWU, both from my home university and from SWU. Because normally it is not common to study at two faculties at the same time. And I think there are also normally no exchange students at the Economics faculty. But thanks to the Ajarns and deans who helped me a lot I was able to study at SWU again, which I am really thankful for.

Teresa : It’s not a difficult but an unusual one: to wear school uniforms. But I figured out that I would love having unitary clothing in Germany. The feeling of solidarity is very high and you don’t have to think about what to wear in the morning so you save time.

– What impresses you at SWU? (friends, teacher etc.)

Andi : All the students and teachers were from begin on really kind to us. When I needed help with something, everyone tried to answer me my questions.
(นิสิตและอาจารย์ทุกคนใจดีกับพวกเรามากครับ เมื่อไหร่ที่ผมต้องการความช่วยเหลือ พวกเขาจะพยายามช่วยเหลือตลอด)
Rob : What impresses me at SWU is the amount of respect students have towards each other, but especially towards teachers. In Holland students do not have as much respect to their teachers as here in Thailand, and Dutch people can definitely learn a lot from Thai people when it comes to showing respect to others.

Malo : The relation between teacher and students impresses me because it is a close relation with a lot of respect. I am also impressed about how friendly everyone is here.
(ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างอาจารย์และนิสิตทำให้ผมประทับใจครับ เพราะเป็นความสัมพันธ์ที่สนิทสนมและเต็มไปด้วยความเคารพ ผมยังประทับใจเกี่ยวกับความเป็นมิตรของทุกคนที่นี่ด้วยครับ)
Teresa : I loved the orientation days at the beginning of the semester. Everybody was so kind and it was perfectly organized. When the classes started, the Thai students showed a lot of interest towards us Internationals. They helped us immediately when we had any questions.
Furthermore, I love how interactive the classes are in Thailand: teachers don’t have a monologue but try to include the students as much as possible.

– Except Bangkok, have you ever been to anywhere else in Thailand?

Andi : I was in Koh Samui and in Kho Phan-gan for the fullmoon party, but these won’t be the only destinations. In addition, I’m planning to go to the mountains in the
north of Thailand and in the south to the islands.
(ผมเคยไปเกาะสมุย และเกาะพะงัน เพื่อไป fullmoon party ครับ แต่นี่จะไม่ใช่แค่นี้นะครับ ผมวางแผนจะไปภูเขาทางภาคเหนือของประเทศไทย และจะไปเกาะทางใต้ด้วย)
Rob : Last year I have travelled to quite some places in Thailand like Chiang Mia, Ayutthaya, Krabi, Phi Phi Islands, Koh Larn, Pattaya & Koh Chang. This year I have been travelling to some more places as well like Koh Mak & Koh Samui, and I am planning to travel to some more places in Thailand as well.

Malo : I’ve been in Chang-mai, Chang-rai, Hua Hin, Sukhotai, Ayuttaya, Koh Samui and Koh Tao.

Teresa : Yes, with other internationals we’ve been in Ko Samui and Kho Pangan to go to the full moon party. It was quite a nice and unforgettable experience and was good to see some nature after being for weeks in Bangkok.

– What is the different between Thailand and your country?

Andi : Traffic and the people in general. The traffic in Germany on the highways can be sometimes horrible but I think nothing can stop the horrible traffic in Bangkok.
The people in Thailand are more friendly and always smiling.

Rob : Some differences between Thailand and Holland are like stated above the amount of respect Thai people have towards each other and the (street)food culture. Dutch people are also more direct and will say whenever the agree or disagree with something.

Malo : University system is very different (small classes, attendance, uniforms). We also don’t have Buddhism influence in France.

Teresa : Of course, the climate is very different. The temperature which Thais declare as “Thai winter” is almost the summer in Germany – but after a while you get used to it and learn to love it. Furthermore, people in Thailand are very collectivistic, while Germans are more individualistic – everybody is very kind and helpful.

– Do you have problems to communicate with Thai friends or Thai people?

Andi : No, all my Thai friends can speak English and I’m also learning some basic words in Thai.
(ไม่มีครับ เพื่อนคนไทยของผมทั้งหมดพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ และผมกำลังเรียนคำศัพท์ภาษาไทยพื้นฐานอยู่ครับ)
Rob : Luckily many Thai friends speak English, so I can communicate with them, but outside or on the streets it is often difficult to communicate with Thai people, because they don’t speak English.

Malo : Sometimes it is hard to understand English because of the accent. But when people don’t speak English it easy to communicate with google translate.

Teresa : Indeed I attend the class “Thai for communication” in Thailand where I learn the basic skills of Thai language and culture, but in daily life I try to speak English most of the time – That’s where it comes to difficulties because many Thai people can’t speak English very well. But somehow – even with hands and feet – you can always communicate with them.

– What do you like the most in Thailand?

Andi : The Big City Lifestyle, the people, the islands, etc.
(ชอบชีวิตในเมือง ผู้คน แล้วก็เกาะครับ)
Rob : Some things I like the most in Thailand are how nice and friendly the people are, the weather of course is often very nice, and I like the beautiful nature you can find in Thailand, from beautiful jungles to mountains to beaches, Thailand has it all.

Malo : There is a lot of things that I like here. Maybe food is what I like the most because I’m discovering new dishes almost every day and it is very different than what I am used to and it is very tasty.

Teresa : Thai cuisine! I just love the variety of new food, I’ve never tried before and the possibility to buy it everywhere on the streets. It’s so different to European food – I will definitely miss it!
